Notes from the Iranian side of the firewall 🇮🇷
Some context most Bitcoiners outside Iran never see:
• Iran's wartime internet blackout this year lasted 88 days. NetBlocks called it the longest nationwide blackout it has ever recorded, with connectivity down to about 1% of pre-war levels (VOA).
• Access was ordered restored in late May, but only on paper. Kentik's Doug Madory told Filterwatch that Iran's traffic is still around 60% of its early-January level, while officials claim 90%.
• The censorship is getting quieter. One network engineer measured a throttle that lets the first six packets of a connection through, then slows it until it's useless. Monitors see a healthy network; people get nothing.
• Identity is being wired into the pipes: international access on domestically hosted servers now requires national-ID verification, and phone lines get cut as punishment.
That's why I'm building Zamani in Bitcoin: plain-Farsi education on self-custody, privacy and Nostr, for people for whom a frozen account, a cut SIM card or a sudden blackout isn't hypothetical.
I'd love your help, Nostr:
1. Which Bitcoin or Lightning wallets have you seen work well on throttled, flaky connections?
2. Which relays tend to stay reachable under heavy filtering?
3. Which beginner guides are worth translating into Farsi first?
4. Is anyone already making Farsi Bitcoin or Nostr resources I should team up with?
Ideas, pointers and hard criticism all welcome. 🧡
