I have decided that I probably need to step back from the whole discourse around AI for a bit. I obviously do care about it and the impact it is having on everything but it it demoralising to every day be bombarded with messages and opinions about it. Probably means muting/blocking some people or just leaving mastodon altogether for a bit.
Every day I see my peers releasing exciting new tools and I have to decide whether to be excited for them or be suspicious about how they made it. Then I wonder if it even matters: it's either a tool for personal use or for the 100 other weird art people. Then I think about whether I should use AI for some of my creative coding things. It certainly would speed up some things, and it's not like an error in a jpg glitching tool would bring down the NHS. I have used AI a bit for some things, but then I worry about whether even admitting that puts me on a block list and tars me for life. Then I think about my work and how so many creative opportunities are now somehow tied to exploring AI, and those that aren't offer so little pay. And then I'm told by people to "stick to your morals" but I'm looking my at rapidly depleting savings and I'm currently on the train going to a house viewing and I need to make this work somehow.
