With colleagues at a bus cafe in the most touristy part of Kyoto we get a lesson in pattern awareness and stereotypes: the staff can not clear the tables, and for that reason there is "return tray area". Nation A arrives, finds a table cluttered with cups and wrappers. Quietly cleans it up, take their repast, leaves their table spotless. Nation B arrives, finds clean table, leaves all their garbage behind. Nation C arrives to cluttered table, doesn't mind, eat and drink amidst the detritus and filth and leaves the table even worse than they found it. Nation D arrives, in their native language they loudly curse the syphilitic human beasts that did this, with frowns they clean up the table and have their drinks and snacks, cleans up table as they leave.
