Mistral’s sovereignty bet now faces a capability test
Mistral AI has unveiled Large 4, a roughly one-trillion-parameter multimodal model that the French company says was trained on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in European data centers. It plans to release the weights by the end of October, after further red-teaming and safety testing.
What is genuinely new is the combination of scale, claimed training efficiency and deployability. With 52 billion active parameters and a one-million-token context window, Large 4 is aimed at organizations that want to run advanced AI inside their own infrastructure, particularly in finance, government, cybersecurity and chip design.
But early independent results complicate the sovereignty narrative: Artificial Analysis scored the preview at 38, versus 53 for GPT-6 Astra.
