You can always go to the past, but nobody is there anymore. You can't change anything either. It's like finishing a game 100% and then realizing that you can still load save, even though the game is done, but when you do, you find out that there is nothing to do anyway and all the NPCs don't have any dialogues for you. The memory is quite important though, since it can guide us, so we won't make the same mistakes again.
