The Shame of the American Jewish Establishment

In its quest to defend Israel, establishment Jewry has abandoned liberal democracy in the US.

In the 1940s, American Jewry’s most influential organizations argued that expanding individual liberty and political participation for other historically discriminated against Americans would help ensure equal treatment for American Jews.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, this greater focus on Israel gave American Jewish politics a dual—and contradictory—character: support for multiracial democracy and equal rights in the United States combined with opposition to those very principles in the Jewish state.

This ideological contradiction has now been resolved. The American Jewish establishment has largely discarded its strategy of enmeshing the struggle against antisemitism within a broader struggle for the rights of all Americans.
