To be honest, AMD64 and PC hardware really do work like a Japanese idol group. AKB48 attracts fans not by the finished music or the show, they market a new idol's career progression as the product, the key of the fandom is to witness the making of history (engineered, but subject to personal skill, effort and luck). Each member is both a real public media personality and a game's "career mode" character. You pick a member and follow them from the novice to the expert. The timeline is engineered with frequent nodes and checkpoints (e.g. elections) for dramas, where fans discuss member performance and ranking changes. The media and their trivial scandals is the "random event" popup of the game that adds to the drama. Another selling point is that you can personally meet them at IRL events if you pay.
This is exactly how AMD64 CPUs worked in the PC hardware community.
