As far as i know amethyst doesn't show it. Wisp/dark-wisp show it.
PoW on a note is just like PoW on bitcoin (and hashcash), a value is modified in the note until the hash of the note meets the required difficulty, and what it does is prove that you spent some power on your machine to generate the note. This is a good spam prevention measure because it bottlenecks how many messages a machine can generate and they cost a small but real amount on your power bill.
I'm throwing the idea out that it could be used to rank notes, the more important your note the more PoW you attach to it, sp it gets shown higher in a feed algorithm. I don't know if anyone has built a feed algo like that.
