Having grown up steeped in those stories and traditions: there are many unspoken assumptions in these cultures, and you learn not to question them lest you get a whole lotta subtle or unsubtle pushback. I'm remembering a time when I was teaching a Sunday School lesson and I said many events in the Book of Genesis were probably metaphorical, coming from (I thought at the time) thousands-years-old oral traditions that eventually got written down. Yeah, my Bishop somewhat angrily interrupted to say these were the words of God and we didn't get to question them.

So you learn to thought-police even when you don't think that's what you're doing. One of the most powerful forms of this is to simply never question some basic assumptions. One of those assumptions is something like "People say this was holy, so it's holy; all explanations must start from that point."
