Book description: “Hiding for My Life: Being Gay in the Navy” by Karen Solt is a memoir about Solt’s experience enlisting in the Navy at 18, discovering she is gay, and navigating the harsh reality of serving in 1984 when being gay was considered a crime in the military. The book explores her struggle to conceal her sexuality in an environment where gay sailors were hunted by the Navy Criminal Investigative Service, the personal and professional challenges she faced, and the devastating consequences of living a double life. It is a story of desire, addiction, secrecy, the power of community, and the painful cost of being forced into hiding, ultimately celebrating resilience and the call to live one’s truth openly.
This book reveals so much about the way society, both knowingly and intentionally, establishes norms that often serve no one, but cause grief, harm and hurt. Yet, despite that, the author survived it and thrives today. I love her message and her realization of what it means to live her truth. Something i think everyone who reads this book will profit from.
