So I ran a little garden experiment. Yesterday, I noticed that my hummingbird feeder was swarmed with wasps, and they were intimidating and preventing the hummingbirds from visiting. I did some research and found that the capsaicin in chiles (the spicy stuff) is a valid wasp deterrent. So I cut open one of my fresh chiles and carefully wiped it over just the glass and lid of the hummingbird feeder — but not the little portals that the birds use to feed. And it worked! It was very good to see wasps try to get near the feeder then immediately fly away, and they haven’t been back today. Meanwhile, the hummingbirds have resumed their visits, and are not bothered by wasps. Yay, chiles! 🥳
