"content": "Happy Waitangi Day, Aotearoa!\n\nIn celebration, we're highlighting Whale Rider, the international hit movie about a Māori girl who challenges gender norms to pursue her destiny, based on the acclaimed novel by Witi Ihimaera. \n\nWhen Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance at age 13, she became the youngest actress ever nominated for the award at that time and the first Indigenous actress and first Māori actress ever nominated.\n\nWe were honored to partner with the filmmakers to make the official teaching guide for this film.
