The reason it is private is because it was originally created as a premine scam under the name “bytecoin” and the creator lied about the available supply, and also lied about its history and how it was used, saying it was used extensively on darknet markets for years before he posted it to bitcointalk.

He then spun up a bunch of premined forks under other nyms. Cryptonote coins were a big thing back then.

Monero creator also “accidentally” did a massive premine, but was a different guy to the original bytecoin dev.
