As a haunting tale of innocence lost it is no surprise that "Elfenlied" takes its namesake / story directly from two Romantic-era poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
One poem (Erlkönig) tells a story based on an ancient Germanic legend, depicting a queen elf who lurks within the shadowy depths of the Black Forest, luring unsuspecting children to their tragic fate.
