sign language and specifically ASL is better than closed captioning. Signed English is stupid yes. But ASL cuts a lot of unneeded things from talking. Filler words. So it is faster. And you hit a wider audience. People born deaf learn English as a second language and asl first.
Probably part performative for sure but it’s also just different and better from captions.
