After returning from the shop, I dug up a technical documentation from the gear manufacturer - Sturmey Archer. It says: "Switch to gear 2, adjust, so the two yellow marks align, then switch to gear 4 and back to gear 2 to see if it holds".
Whoever wrote the manual for Early Rider (quite possibly AI) made "Switch to gear 4 and adjust" out of it.
