I often have to warn people about this:
Your music collection’s “value” on Discogs is not its actual value. It’s just a thing Discogs puts there to encourage you to buy more records.
How do I know this?
Because I constantly find “super rare” vinyl in thrift stores and flea markets. And it’s not as though I deliberately look for this stuff. It just finds me.
Music is one of those things that doesn’t hold its value. It’s a terrible investment vehicle. Worse than comic books or Beanie babies.
Because if you’re old enough, you remember the era when people were giving away their vinyl to replace them with CDs. And now they’re getting rid of their CDs to replace them with vinyl.
So when I see people buying 40 variants of the same Taylor Swift album—believing it’s an “investment”—I can’t help but shake my head.
