Boron arsenide guides heat in ‘rays,’ and could allow for better computer chips. Heat in most materials spreads out in every direction like ink in water — but UCLA engineers have shown that in boron arsenide it can be made to travel in focused rays instead, at room temperature, guided by the crystal’s structure. If this technique scales, computer chip designers could steer heat away from chips’ hot spots on purpose.
