Using digikey as a pricing reference: the upduino's ice40 is $15.70/ea, the cheapest ECP5 is $22.10/ea. That's for double the logic gates and triple the pins, in a TQFP form factor that doesn't suck too much to solder at home (esp. with hot plate).
Top-end ECP5 (16x the gates and 6x the IO of ice40) is around $100. That's the one of the dev board I have, but I don't think there's any need to go that far.
