Miller is not wrong, but he fails to understand that the principles of the civilization we are struggling to create in the last few hundred years are diametrically opposed to his “might makes right” philosophy. These principles, including those that gained prominence during the Enlightenment, have led us to believe that the legitimacy of government is based on consent of the governed. This abstract idea is imperfectly implemented, but it is broadly popular and we learn how to do it better all the time. If you believe in humanism, particularly our founding principles of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” then Miller’s political philosophy is a dangerous throwback to a coarser time. He would agree and that is what makes him an enemy of the people.
