Since I have been involved in nearly all academic hiring decisions at the humanities faculty at Stockholm University the past three years, I take this accusation very personally.

It's definitely not the case that people at the department gets to decide who is hired. People in the field have a very large influence, yes, but these reviewers are external, very often from other countries.
