It's not materialistic. Material is a means to an end. The end is the drama. If I want peace, I'm at odds with the creator of the universe, and it makes no difference if that creator is me in disguise or some completely external thing. What I can see is that the drama is the point. The fall, the separation from God, was God's plan. Maybe the return is God's plan too, and maybe its plan, but I can see for sure that the drama is the now and now is what is.
