AOSP is open source. Hardware and firmware being closed source is unavoidable and there's no alternative available without it. The kernel drivers are entirely open source but the userspace code for the drivers is not which will be replaced in the future. It isn't currently a priority. The userspace code can already be easily reverse engineered since it isn't obfuscated and has debug symbols. We reverse engineer it to solve problems all the time. It has become drastically easier recently.
