Today’s FOSS pet peeve is people who still recommend OpenOffice in 2024.
OpenOffice received its last update of note 10 years ago.
If you haven’t yet noticed that it was replaced with LibreOffice *13 years* ago, that says something about your ability to keep informed, and says a lot about whether your advice should be followed.
⸻
TL;DR: due to corporate shenanigans, many OpenOffice developers left the project in 2011 and created a clone named LibreOffice.
OpenOffice would receive two more major updates (4.0 in 2013 and 4.1 in 2014) before going mostly dormant.
LibreOffice has remained regularly updated, the latest major version to date being 24.8 (August 2024).
