If Trump is “just a businessman,” he can be bargained with! If he’s an apolitical mess, then it won’t be that bad because he doesn’t really mean it. And best of all: If Trump is not a committed authoritarian, then we can’t be blamed for electing one.
But those are coping mechanisms.
