If you haven't played the Ur-Quan masters (star control 2) you absolutely should!
It's a somewhat strange combination of adventure game, RPG, and space sim. I cannot recommend it enough!
I have not played any of the sequels, as far as I'm aware they were made by different teams so I don't know if they are worth playing.
