had a very instructive case of this a while back, where I read someone's "jokes" as passive aggressive digs coming from anger or resentment or my having upset them somehow

(stirred further by an abuser, fwiw, probably on both ends)

And when I asked them about it so I could apologised, they denied being angry or anything. And then got angry enough that I'd asked, and blocked me

Took me ages to break through my usual "give them the benefit of the doubt" empathy shit and accept that no, I was right, and they were pissed off that I'd caught them out
