AI companies urging the industry to “slow down” are full of shit. If you’ve ever worked at a startup or large tech firm, you know it’s bullshit. These companies are literally incapable of “slowing down.” They exist to make money as rapidly as possible, grow by double digits year over year, and capture more of our time and attention. This is them trying to create a cartel, and protect themselves likely because they know they’re all plateauing and there’s not much they can do beyond what they already do. And that would be fine, in the same way lots of software has been fine for several decades now. I didn’t need my web browser to do much more than it did already in 2006. I didn’t need my search engine to do more than it did in 2001.
But that’s never stopped a product manager or a CEO or a PE financier. They won’t slow down and any claims to this effect are lies.
