There is a big difference between giving Iran a broken nose and crushing it for good.

War with Iran is a MAD sort of situation. The Western powers might win, but it would be a pyrrhic victory in the absolute best case scenario. Iran will probably be able to hold out in some capacity, but it is likely the current leadership would all be killed. Therefore, neither side actually wants to go to war, but can't be seen to back down. So they will keep saber rattling and making select missile strikes and assassinations without crossing the line that will lead to an all out war.
