…the fact that both of my parents were considered weirdos in their respective cultures (this is pretty common with mixed families).

Part of the reason for some of my notions comes from being Generation X. I am from the “latchkey kid” generation. As the oldest child, I was often left alone and given the responsibility for taking care of my siblings at an age that would probably not be considered appropriate today.

Because of this, I got lots of lectures about being responsible for others.
