One of my favourite novels about novels is Calvino's If on a Winter's Night, but that book, despite being about the love of reading itself, has just about the worst handfeel. The stock is rigid and boring, the cover is unpliable and stiff and sticky. It's just about the worse physical book artifact I own.

I wish uncut books would come back. There's something about getting a fresh uncut copy, taking the time to cut up the folds, look at the pages, read some bits here and there, familiarizing yourself with the thing and caring to not tear any of it up.

I wish these would come back.
