I use NixOS, which encourages this pattern; you can tie "nix-shell -p zoom-us" and be dropped into a shell with zoom installed. Exit the shell and it's not installed any more. A cache is kept so it's slow the first time as it downloads or compiles stuff, but it's instant after that.
It's quick enough I even use "nix-shell -p nodejs_20 --command 'npm run dev'" when I'm testing a nodeJS thing I work on.
