Husband and I both remember our families getting their first microwaves in the late 1970s/early 1980s, and kitchen appliances being big gameshow prizes ("You win an AMANA RADAR RANGE!"). A lot of the EWRT public workshops in the 1970s seemed to be teaching women (and men!) to use these trendy new electrical gadgets safely.
