A quotation mark does almost nothing. No sound, no letters, no meaning of its own. All it says is: these words came from someone.

Remove it and the same sentence, unchanged word for word, stops being testimony and becomes assertion.

When a company was caught publishing AI-written citation summaries as if a scientist had written them, it did not retract the sentence. It removed the quotation marks and kept the words.

The sentence was never the problem. The mark was.
