Yes, I agree; the 'normalisation' is a real issue - in the small village in which I live there are a fair amount of right-wingers & what is fascinating is when we do talk politics my positions are treated as ideological whereas there're presented as common-sense & when I try to point this out, I'm told, 'ah well, you are a retired Professor' but in a way that is intended to disparage analysis & reflects (as you say) an anti-intellectualism
