Here's an old favourite thought of mine.

When you see something really old that people made, such as Late Palaeolithic cave art or the Göbekli Tepe monument, you may think "This truly says something of humankind's origins". But you're wrong. Because these things are quite late in our species' history. Göbekli Tepe is much closer in time to the supermarket you shop at than it is to our speciation event in Africa, which is as yet archaeologically undetected. It's all historically contingent.
