21 Nights of Hávamál (stanzas 33 through 40)
These are my modern interpretations of the verses of the Hávamál; Odin’s sayings.
33. Don’t arrive at a friends house hungry,
You’ll be so busy eating that you won’t be good company.
34. Bad friends take a lot of effort to interact with, even if they’re right next to you.
Talking to a real friend is straightforward and easy, even if you’re far away.
35. Don’t overstay your welcome,
Even a beloved guest gets tiring after a while.
36. Any house can be a home, even a shitty one.
Having a place of your own is still better than waiting for generosity.
37. Any house can be a home, because it is your own.
Having to constantly ask for donations is demoralizing.
38. When going to an unfamiliar place, be prepared and bring things with you,
You never know what you might need.
39. I have never met a person who wouldn’t take something that’s free,
Or who would refuse a reward when offered one.
40. If you have money, you shouldn’t hoard it,
Intentions for savings often don’t turn out as you would expect.
