Dear Senator
I want you to freeze the Department of Homeland Security's budget at 2024 levels unless this Republican Administration agrees to major reforms in how DHS operates.
The budget this Republican Administration pushed through last year has not completed its full appropriations process, which means that you have a chance to withhold the appropriations from DHS.
I want you to withhold appropriations from DHS unless they fully obey every US law, every US policing procedure without exception, every line item of due process, and every possible opportunity for transparency.
I know that the individual funding bills are making their way through the House and Senate. I also know that the detailed allocating of the funds still has to pass by 60 votes in the Senate.
By meaningful reform, I mean: due process, marked cars, officers with faces visible, with names and badge numbers, calls to family, access to lawyers, access to food, water, medical treatment, no shooting tear-gas and less-than-lethal projectiles directly at the faces of protestors, no pointing weapons directly in the face of people exercising their first amendment rights.
If the bill that comes in front of you does not cover these changes to DHS, freeze DHS's budget at 2024 levels.
You have the power to end the ICE abuses. I want you to use it.
