Goose is a memory-safe systems programming language that eliminates heap allocation, garbage collection, and lifetime annotations by utilizing compiler-managed data stacks for dynamic values. It achieves faster execution and lower memory usage than C++ and Rust in benchmarks. Goose’s type and lifetime rules ensure safe inline memory management with stable references linked to a static root, avoiding aliasing or exclusivity constraints. It features slices for array views, inline variable-size structs without indirect pointers, and algebraic data types as the sole form of dynamic polymorphism. References can be relative offsets, enabling position-independent data structures easily saved and loaded without serialization. The language supports monomorphized generics, no shared mutable memory, and isolated threads communicating via typed queues with flat data. Goose compiles to C and can use the TinyCC backend for efficient in-process compilation. Its design favors contiguous data, bounds-check elimination, and predictable performance. Comprehensive tooling, prebuilt compilers, and integrated graphics/audio/UI/physics packages are available across Windows, Linux, and macOS platforms. The compiler manages C-source integration, package management via git repositories, and runtime building, facilitating high-performance native development with safety guarantees.
