Dennett goes into cultural evolution as an explanation for advancements of human society that he thinks are unique to humans due to our ability to use introspection, memes, and complex language to engage in philosophical conversations about why we think like we do and what we think is good for the advancement of human society. This is a small part of the book which focuses mostly on the biological aspects of natural selection as laid out by Charles Darwin. But I want to share some of Dennett’s writing on this topic of ethics and morality toward the end of the book beginning in a chapter titled, ‘On the Origin of Morality.’ I think it may be relevant to understanding our political predicament in the United States.
