Something struck me oddly on Chef & My Fridge. They had their first ever Black guests, Jonathan and Patricia, and chef Son Jong Won repeatedly made a faux pas talking about their “color”— meaning personality or style, but he used the word color 색깔. They played it off “we are colored” and he acted lightly embarrassed. But the thing is, he grew up in the US, and worked in restaurants in NY, and his English is perfect. He knew exactly what he was saying. It’s not like it was Nam No or another chef who speaks less English or has less cultural experience. Was that exchange scripted, did a producer tell him to say that, or what? 😬
